Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, two of India's premier batsmen, kicked off their first practice session in preparation for the opening ODI of the three-match series against Australia in Perth on Sunday, October 19. The initial group of players for the ODI squad arrived in Perth early in the morning and proceeded directly to the practice ground.
This ODI series marks the return of Rohit and Kohli to international cricket after a six-month hiatus, with their last appearance in the Indian jersey being during the Champions Trophy 2025 Final in March, where India triumphed over New Zealand, ending a 12-year wait for a trophy.
Since retiring from Test cricket in May, both batting icons have not participated in any international matches, making this series against Australia a highly anticipated comeback for them. The duo has arrived in Australia for what is expected to be their farewell tour.
First Day of Practice: Setting the Stage
The Indian squad selected for the ODI series gathered at Optus Stadium in Perth for their inaugural training session, guided by head coach Gautam Gambhir and his coaching staff. The spotlight was particularly on Kohli and Sharma, as fans eagerly awaited their return to the international stage.
A video that gained traction on social media showcased Kohli and Sharma batting side by side in adjacent nets, indicating their readiness for the upcoming matches. Their focused demeanor during this initial practice session set a positive tone for the entire team, highlighting their dedication ahead of the series.
In another clip shared on social media, Rohit Sharma was seen conversing with head coach Gautam Gambhir, likely discussing strategies and preparations for the series opener.
Impressive ODI Records Against Australia
Both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli boast impressive ODI records against Australia on their home turf. Rohit, who recently stepped down from the ODI captaincy, has scored 990 runs, including four centuries and two fifties, with an average of 58.23 across 19 matches.
Kohli, on the other hand, has accumulated 802 runs, featuring three centuries and four fifties, at an average of 47.17 in 18 matches.
Future Prospects: 2027 ODI World Cup
The upcoming ODI series is pivotal for both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, as selectors will closely monitor their form, fitness, and performance to evaluate their potential roles in the long-term ODI strategy leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be hosted in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia.
During the press conference announcing India's squad for the white-ball tour of Australia, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that both players were uncertain about their participation in the marquee event. However, Shubman Gill, the captain for Tests and ODIs, confirmed that the experienced batters are still part of the World Cup plans, given their proven track record.
When asked about their future in ODIs, head coach Gautam Gambhir provided a vague response, emphasizing that the 2027 World Cup is still a long way off and that the focus should remain on the present.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli aim to deliver outstanding performances during their farewell tour in Australia to secure their places in India's future ODI lineup.
